Andrographis paniculata is found in Java, Malaysia, Indonesia, the West Indies, and elsewhere in the Americas. The species also occurs in Hong Kong, Thailand, Brunei, Singapore, and other parts of Asia where it may or may not be native. It is used to treat infections and some other disease. Its leaves and roots were used for medicinal purposes.

Genus Andrographis consists of 28 species of small annual shrubs which is distributed in tropical Asia. Only a few species are medicinal, of which Andrographis paniculata is the most popular.

It is an erect annual herb extremely bitter in taste. The plant is known as north-eastern India as Maha-tita which literally means as “King of bitters”. 

Andrographis paniculata grows erect to a height of 30-110 cm in moist and shady plane. Stem is dark green having longitudinal furrows and wings along the angles. It has lance-shaped leaves have hairless blades. Leaves are 8 cm long and 2.5 wide. It has small flowers. The fruit is a capsule around 2 cm long and a few millimetres wide. It has yellow- brown seeds.

Plant can be found in habitats like plains, hillsides, coastlines and disturbed an cultivate in areas such roadsides, farms, and wastelands.

Traditional uses of Andrographis paniculata

It has blood purifying activity. So, it is used in treatment of leprosy, gonorrhoea, scabies, boils, skin eruptions, and chronic and seasonal fevers.

Its juice which is derived from fresh leaves is given to infants to relieve griping, irregular bowel habits and loss of appetite.

Leaves and root are used in general weakness and in gaseous distension. In China, the herb derived from the leaves or aerial parts of Andrographis paniculata is known as Chuanxinlian, Yijianxi or Lanhelian. It is described as bitter and cold. Andrographis paniculata is used for the treatment of pharyngolaryngitis, diarrhea, dysentery, and cough with thick sputum, carbuncle, sores, and snake bites. A primary modern use of Andrographis paniculata is for the prevention and treatment of the common cold. It appears to have antithrombotic actions, suggesting a possible benefit in cardiovascular disease. It is also used in treatment of various conditions like epidemic encephalitis B, suppurative otitis media, neonatal subcutaneous annular ulcer, vaginitis, cervical erosion, pelvic inflammation, herpes zoster, chicken pox, mumps, neurodermatitis, eczema, and burns.

15 drops of Andrographis paniculata mother tincture in half a cup of normal water twice a day until symptoms disappear for 3 months or as prescribed by physician. It can be taken with Allopathic medicines.

  2. My house have this plans for a long time but i am not realize the useful until my friend told about it. Since then i used the leaves once a week. Its very bitter i do not known the benefit from it. I have diabetics, is it good for it & what is the consumable level in one day. Thanks.
