About Acne and Pimples

Acne which is also known as pimples is common condition which is seen nowadays. Pimples may vary from few small pimples which disappear in very short time.


Severity of acne may vary from mild, moderate and severe form. Acne may be inflammatory and non-inflammatory type.

Non-inflammatory acne is milder type and is known as pimples or blackheads.

A simple way to distinguish between pimples and acne, is that acne develops over a longer period and stays for longer duration. It also leaves red marks or scars behind.

Pimples usually forms quickly and go away again soon afterwards.

Mild acne: It includes comedones, blackheads or whiteheads. These are caused as a result of clogging of pores of skin. These look dark as blackheads are open and contains a pigment known as melanin. It reacts with oxygen in the air.

Whiteheads are closed. They are white or yellowish in colour. It occurs when oil builds up on face. It results in multiplication of bacteria which causes inflammatory acne.

Moderate acne: Those people who have moderate acne have more pimples. Inflamed pimples are called papules or pustules. Papules are small bumps and pustules are filled with yellow pus.

Severe acne: Patient with severe form of acne have lots of papules and pustules. Sometimes these individuals have nodules which are reddish and painful. Acne in these individuals lead to scarring.

Types of pimples

  • Whiteheads: These stay under the surface of the skin.
  • Blackheads: These type rise to the skin surface and look black in colour.
  • Papules: These are small pink bumps. These are generally painful.
  • Pustules: These pimples are red at the bottom and have pus on top.
  • Nodules: These are large painful, solid pimples which are present deep in the skin.
  • Cysts: It is deep, painful and pus filled pimples which often cause scars.

Causes of Pimples

Oil is secreted by a special gland known as sebaceous glands. These are oil glands. Sebum produced by these glands helps in protection of skin and acts as a natural moisturizer.
